Project
GraceFully
An online food delivery service that is designed to cater to the unique needs of the senior demographic.
This is a semester project where I had to conduct user research and develop a elderly digital product with my team. Our primary goal was to resolve the challenges many elderly individuals face in meal preparation and ensure they have enjoyable food options with our service. My role was to conduct user research while taking the initiative to lead the team.

Overview
Problem
How to address health concern of the age group with varying levels of digital familiarity?
Outcome
Includes the feature of dietary customization with accessibility accommodation on a (deliberately designed) intuitive user interface; gained 90% positive feedback during evaluations
User Research
During our interview process, we chose to target seniors within the age range of 52 to 76 to be our participants.
To engage with potential senior users for this service, we conducted in-personal interviews in a semi-structured manner.

expressed frustration with apps that required excessive steps
Discovery #1 - Accessibility:
User-friendliness were highly valued, with a specific desire for options like larger text for improved readability.
Discovery #2 - Data security:
Users wanted to feel confident that their personal information, especially payment data, was not vulnerable to breaches.

Intuitive User Interface
Simplistic design with straightforward instructions on a navigational interface enables our customer base to easily access our service to browse and purchase
Concise Payment Instructions
Clarity in payment instructions for the elderly customer base to feel safe and confident with online transactions.
Accessibility Accommodations
Options to adjust tiny font sizes and descriptive images to cater to those with visual impairments
Detailed Nutritional Information
Allows the users to understand the information they need for their well-being, especially those with specific dietary restrictions or health conditions
Task descriptions
Based on the data obtained from interviews, we created user personas and established task description, thus created a tentative list of requirements for the app.
Categories of the list:
- Must include (shown on the left side)
- Should include
- Could include
- Exclude
The list helped us to consider features to focus on during the design process.

Paper Prototype

Cognitive Walkthroughs of Paper Propotypes
After building paper models of the online platforms for both desktop and mobile views, we chose to adopt cognitive walkthrough as an evaluation method, which was efficient for the investigation to identify the concrete research area and goals in the design stages.
Key findings
- the platform demonstrated intuitive and centralized navigation with a consistent structure, underscoring the aim of easing user flow
- the primary area for improvement was the accessibility of dietary customization to be more visible
- supplementary incorporation of a user feedback component would also be beneficial
Task #1: Meal customization for dietary needs
Insight:
- difficult for users to access the customization option
- clarity of terminology used for the dietary preferences
Improvement:
- introducing more prominent prompts as visual cues on the main menu
- suggesting a user-friendly and streamlined process for the users once they can access the customization feature
Task #2: Ordering and tracking the delivery
Insight:
- showcased a straightforward process for users to order and track the delivery
- flexible payment methods catered to the capabilities of the elderly demographic
Improvement:
- suggesting a user-friendly and streamlined process for the users once they can access the customization feature

Heuristic Evaluations
We conducted two summative evaluations studies, aiming to assess the readiness of the high-fidelity prototype for the platform. By recruiting participants with relevant knowledge of UX design, the study simulated real-world usage scenarios to validate the platform’s usability and effectiveness.
Framework
- Evaluation criteria: Nielsen’s 10 usability heuristics
- Issue evaluation: 5-point scale

Issues to address
1
Pre-existing allergies or dietary limitations
- Dietary customization when onboarding
- Products include detailed information, displaying nutritional values
- Uses algorithms to provide personalized meal recommendations based on user preferences
2
Lack of Visual representation
- Interactive Shopping Cart
- Enhanced Navigation (“Back”, “Edit” buttons)
- Favourite Features
3
Potential visual impairments
- Voice-over support
- Color blindness mode
- Adjustable text size for improved readability
4
Difficulties in navigating technology
- Support and FAQ Features
- Convenient Payment Methods: Incorporation of cash-paying methods
- Implement onboarding video tutorials within the app

Retrospective
First UX UI Project!
This was my first UX UI project. From designing and conducting the evaluations, the team was able to create the high fidelity prototypes with evaluations within 2 months. Due to the time constraint, we were not able to further enhance the overall usability. Nevertheless, I believe that this project serves as a foundation for me to develop my career path into the field of user experience.
01: Leadership is important
During the project, I found leading the team is more challenging than I expected. By breaking down workload into a structured team framework, I learnt how to solve team conflict through internal communication.
02: Empathizing is difficult
Through taking into concern variations in the internet, user scenarios, and possible issues distinct to different ways of life, this bigger assessment approach seeks to show how the app works in a variety of settings. I learned that it is crucial to carry out tests in different circumstances to understand our app's real-world performance.
